There are so many interests and hobbies we have as adults. Some like to read and others paint. Some watch videos or play video games. Some like to hike and others garden. Ultimately our hobbies are things that we enjoy. We could talk about loving our work so that you never really feel like you work a day in your life but that maybe a topic for another day.
Our hobbies can burn so passionately in us that they can become a “cause”.
This is what has happened to Crystal.
She likes reading up and studying a certain subject. It is probably not the most normal topic to follow but it’s what she enjoys. She loves talking about it, researching again and again to see what’s new. She enjoys it so much that she has bought different products and also visited a site that produces one of the many products.
It is interesting for sure to hear everything but it is not really one of my interests.
What can we do or should we do when this happens? When their interests aren’t our interests.
There are many options.
1- Indifference has to be a favorite for all of us. I know nothing of it and don’t really care so all I hear is blah blah blah.
2- Playing along is another. Hear everything, nod our heads, and ask a question here or there. Again we don’t really care but we try to act as if we do.
3- Get involved. Yes this means that their interest or hobby will occupy some of our brain and time. This also means that we have to pay attention.
Getting involved is the best response when in this situation.
We are given the responsibility and privilege to try to grab all of their zeal, their energy, their excitement, their passion and channel it correctly. Use it for good and not evil. We must help them to accomplish their dreams and not crush them as ours may have been.
Dixie told me the other day that she is going to be rich when she grows up. I told her that that is what we all wanted when we were kids. Her response was perfect, “Yes, but I will succeed.”
When were our dreams crushed?
Thats hard to know but let’s make sure that we don’t crush their dreams. We should help make sure that their dreams come true.
