School days

As the girls first quarter came to an end, the school sets up student led conferences. These are a highlight as the girls get to tell me about their own performance in school. Their behaviour, homework, tests, and struggles will not only be seen by me but will also be spoken from their own mouth.

As a parent it’s nice to see your kids owning up to their work. Hearing their thoughts and expressions about school. Listening to what their own expectations were and are for themselves. What did they expect and how did they execute? What solutions do they bring to remedy whatever needs it.

This is great for a parent to experience as we can see our children under a new light, a grown up in process of maturing.

Unfortunately parents don’t pay attention. Many simply don’t care. We are busy and bombarded by everything life has for us. We can’t find time for anything. Some parents never make it to a school activity.

Try to squeeze an extra 15 minutes out of a 24hr day! Like time will warp itself for our own selfish desires. Even if we could get an extra 15 we probably wouldn’t invest it wisely.

For some reason we, the parents, have disconnected ourselves from many aspects of our children’s lives.

We expect teachers to teach our children. Yes it sounds obvious and almost redundant but it shouldn’t. A teacher’s job is to teach not to be a parent!

It doesn’t matter how great a teacher is, they should never replace you as a parent.

We assume that all things needed to be learned will be given by the teachers.

We can’t be indifferent!

We must be present!

We must show interest in their lives, even in those things that we think are non important.

Indifference can be contagious. We can’t blame our kids for not caring when we have taught them to not care.
