Long live the king!

As kids grow of course everything they ask permission for changes. I continually find myself at a loss for words, feeling confused, and surprised at everything they ask for.

There isn’t a road map that can adequately prepare for all of life’s twists ands turns. I can ask for help and seek guidance but ultimately I am the only one that knows my children. No one else has the inside scoop on their interests, desires, and dreams.

Dixie and I were talking and she asked when she can have a boyfriend. After the initial shock wore off, I was able to catch my breathe and get ready to respond as every father should, “Over my dead body”.

She is 14. She is too young to let romance mess up her brain. She isn’t ready. Boys are stupid. There isn’t a boy good enough for you.

Yes, those were all of my thoughts. You can judge me, be upset and offended. I don’t care about your feelings on this subject. She is my daughter.

Dixie’s response caught me more off guard than the question did.

“So, when are you going to die?”

Yes she was smiling, laughing, and happy but it shows something very important.

We must learn to listen not only to our kids but also to their hearts. Her heart is not saying that she wants to kill me, it is saying that she really wants a boyfriend.

The story of the king of Portugal and his son, the prince, come to mind. At least it’s the story I know. The son asked when he could be king. The king knew that that could only happen one way. Being wise he allowed his son to become king of Brazil. All of a sudden the prince of Portugal became a king, and the King didn’t have to die.

It’s better to listen to their hearts and understand where they are coming from, why do they have these interests, desires, and dreams.

If we truly listen and learn we will not only allow them to accomplish their dreams but we will also ensure a longer more peaceful life for ourselves.

P.S. Dixie still can’t have a boyfriend.
