Today I wanted to take a moment to talk about me.
Me is always the easiest subject to talk about. It is perhaps the most misunderstood topic as well. No matter how hard we try we never truly explain who we really are.
Some of this is due to a false modesty. That is when we try to make ourself look less than what we are so that others can lift us up.
Another reason would be to hide. Hiding everything we consider to be wrong with ourselves. Hiding isn’t always easy because sooner or later our true identity shows itself louder than the words we speak.
Lastly, I believe many of us don’t tell the whole truth because we are trying to change who we are. It would be nice to think that we are changing to make ourselves better but many times it’s not to be better but it is to be someone different.
I was talking recently with a friend about something along these lines.
She was talking about how she was trying to be mom and dad. To be fair I think this is something that touches all of us to some degree, but in this instance it seems quite obvious. She will never be mom and dad.
This shows us a very important lesson. We need to learn how to be who we are.
I need to be me. I can’t be mom so I should focus on being dad. How can I be dad? Simply by being me. I will be more beneficial to my daughters being me over trying to be someone I am not.
I guess one of life’s greatest questions will always be about identity. It is not as easy as just asking the magic mirror the questions about my self image.
We need to figure out who we are and stick to it. Stop trying to be someone we aren’t.
You will never see me wearing a dress or dancing ballet, but you will see me enjoying the outdoors, joking around, and trying to make the girls laugh.
That’s who I am and I am sticking to it.
