I enjoy days like today when I can look back on Valentine’s Day. I enjoy February 14th. It really is a great day to be alive. It makes me want to break out in song, “love is in the air”. It is a great day to express your love. A day to give and receive flowers and heart shaped chocolates and candies.
I was talking with Crystal and Dixie over the weekend and we discussed it being the day for love and friendship. I looked at them and said, “It used to be only for those in love. They added friendship for all of those people not in a relationship.” Their response was one of sadness and even more disgust simultaneously.
My point was not to hurt them or make them feel bad. I believe my point was, that I don’t know when it happened but I believe friendship was added at some point. That is also fine but I am not as big of a fan of it. The analytical side of me says that it was added to sell more things, maybe a way to open up the potential buyers to the entire globe. Dare we call it a second Christmas but only for those people we like?
I remember a comic strip some years ago. dad and the kids are taking mom breakfast in bed. That day mom is not expected to do anything. Why? It’s Mother’s Day. One of the kids looks at dad and asks, does that mean every other day of the year is Father’s Day?
My question would be, why just one day?
Why not celebrate love and friendship everyday? Who are we celebrating every other day of the year?
Could it be that we celebrate ourselves everyday and finally celebrate someone else just one day?
Let’s remember that today is the best day to celebrate those that are in our life, whether they be the love of our life or a friend.
Don’t make it a tradition to only celebrate others just one once a year.
Celebrate them everyday and let that be our new lifestyle!
